A part I didn't like was when Max was near death. When it is winter and Liesel brings snow to Max to give him one good experience, he gets sick from the cold and nearly dies, and Liesel spends a lot of time worrying about him. "Liesel rushed home from each day in the hope that Max was was feeling better" (319). I didn't like this because I really like his character, and I was worried (with Liesel) that he would die.

An important part was when Hans gave a Jewish person bread. When the Nazis were taking the Jews on death marches, they took them through Himmel Street, and Hans gave one bread. "Hans Hubermann held his hand out and presented a piece of bread, like magic" (385). This was important because it shows how kind he is to those with less fortunate circumstances than him, but, it led to him being forced to join the military.

One friendship I like seeing is Liesel and Max together. When Max comes to live with the Hubermanns, Liesel starts off very shy toward him. Eventually, Liesel opens up and they become great friends. "Together, Max Vandenburg and Liesel Meminger would take in the odor of paint fumes and cement" (248). I like this friendship because although it is unlikely; the two discover they have lots in common and help each other.

An important part was when Death reveals that Hans is helping Max and why. Death reveals that Hans is helping a Jew, Max, hide from the Nazis because Max's father saved Hans's life during World War I. "A Jew had once saved life and he couldn't forget that." (180). This is important because Hans has been trying to join the Nazi party for a long time in order to fit in, so it is surprising he would hide a Jewish man.

A trait to describe Hans is caring. When Liesel cannot sleep, he reads and comforts her despite not knowing her for that long. “The girl knew from the outset that Hans Hubermann would always appear midscream, and he would not leave” (37). This shows he is caring because despite not knowing her well or why she is screaming, he is always there to help her when she wakes up terrified.
