The shocking loss at Tannenberg:
The author says it is still debated by historians how the Teutonic Knights lost this battle. It was a shock. There’s speculation about treason on the Germans side. It could have been Jagiello withholding some his troops until the last minute. It also could have been Jagiello outnumbered the Knights almost 2 to 1. Also, Jagiello’s troops were much more rested than the Germans

Complicated mess:
I’m not sure if the fall of the Teutonic Knights is an example of forcefully causing a change in beliefs does not work. The irony of the situation is that certain happenings seem to create a different reaction. Which action came first? It seems that the fall of the enforcer Teutonic Knights may have created the desired outcome after all, the conversion of the Pagan Lithuanian to Christianity

A complicated mess:
The Chapter on the Battle of Tannenberg is next. The author just told us about trade being a reason for unnecessary conflict. The purpose of the Teutonic Knights seems to have changed in the early 1400’s. It’s original purpose was to convert Pagans in Samogitia. Somehow,Jagiello of Poland interpreted blockading of trade routes by the Teutonic Knights as having nothing to do with conversion

Krakow and Wawel Castle:
I understand Warsaw was mostly destroyed during WW2, but most of pre WW2 Krakow is still intact. According to this book, most of the history of Poland originated in Krakow, circa 900 AD. The book is going into detail about King Jajiello, circa 1380. The author is warming us up with information about both Teutonic Knights and Jajiello, probably to make our own conclusion who were the bad guys

Intro:
I wanted to read this book because it seemed like a good starting point for a glorious 400 years for Poland in 1350. As I just finished the introduction of the book, this whole conflict with the Teutonic Knights was very complicated and it might be difficult to determine who’s the good guy and who’s the bad guy. The Teutonic Knights were the aggressors, but that’s about it for being the bad guys
