It was hard for me to read of the way that casual racism (and I'm sure oftentimes quite serious and even violent) existed in this story, even if it was an accurate description of the past, even if it was told by a Black person; it was too incongruous to what is acceptable today and there was no explanation given, at least not as far as I got into it. DNF.
