The murdering kids for blood plot has been exposed. Though I have no idea why it took so long. I find it really hard to believe that Darien never had spies in Karkans or apparently any books about the country that he is so in the dark about everything. Seems like a real plot convenience. & I am really not into the romance due to how contrary Leah has reacted & how reserved/bland Chandran is. A lot of telling too.

Done. Finally, with lots of skimming. Simply not believable. Leah doesn't do anything & doesn't affect the plot. The plot happens elsewhere. Mally became a deus ex machina snowflake bc Leah apparently can't do anything, which made her increasingly annoying. Chandran is also a snowflake being Cozique nobility which Darien had to tell Leah about, not Chandran. Another reason why the romance wasn't believable. Oh well.

Sigh. I'm actually skimming now. It doesn't feel believable & kind of just telling & what's the point if there is no conflict? Mally really just accepts Leah as her mother with zero doubt/anger. Just totally ok. Whatever. When is the kidnapping going to happen so we can get this over with? Leah just doesn't feel like a believable character, especially given how she was in the previous book. Sigh. 60 pages left.

Not into this romance at all. Chandran is too boring & self loathing. Seriously shut up about how you hate yourself already, & only to be healed by lOvE~ ugh. He literally has no purpose except for exposition which could come from other sources. Also the fact that Leah doesn't have to try to be successful, she just magically is due to luck & connections. It doesn't feel like she is affecting the plot. Lacks agency.

I have been putting off reading due to anxiety & so forced myself just now & it's much better knowing what is happening & will happen without the suspense. Cool. I think it is my least favorite of the four but I do want to finish it.

I wish I could enjoy this more but the ANXIETY is strong. If it was folks simply murdering each other, I would be fine, but "doing terroble evil for fun & thinking nothing of it" is really bad for my peace of mind. Especially since children are involved. Might need to spoil it for myself so I know what to expect. Not good with suspense. Also Chandran is kind of boring? & the tragic backstory so dangerous is annoying?

Forget the anxiety inducing intrigue, I just want the found family love & support story. Seriously. Unfortunately, despite being in Welce, this cannot be fun time or almost fun time because I am ANXIOUS about those creepy zealots with no morales or empathy or respect who actively harm others for pleasure. Which is something I hate above all else: actively choosing to cause pain to others for no reason. Abhor it. Ugh.

Chandran is here! But he killed his crazy evil wife! So now he is a threat & dangerous. But not entirely, bc obviously. Not looking forward to the folks from the country where it's accepted that good deeds cancel out bad deeds so as long as you keep balancing the acts you can literally murder a bunch of children if you established a school beforehand or the like. Why would anyone be allies with them?! Makes no sense.

Found family stories are so nice. I actually do love that Leah & Rahn are mature adults about their relationship & can be on actual friendly terms even if they don't particularly prefer the company. But the fact that Mally is now going to be surrounded by people who love her & want her to be herself & embrace want she wants. I'm guessing she's going to be the next torz prime. Hope Chandran comes soon. Go Leah!

It seems it is going to be Chandran who Leah falls in love with, given how she blatantly misses him & wishes she could talk to him & has already written to him three times in nine days & wishes they had had a chance to get closer. So somehow he is going to come to Welce. More friends to lovers! I was anticipating delicious drama but this is good too bc I liked Chandran. & real found family is always wholesome.

I think my initial expectation of Leah & Rahn rekindling their romance as more mature adults would have been A LOT more interesting since then they would be forced to work through their past rather than just moving on. In reality, moving on is good & healthy & desirable, but reading about it is sometimes much more boring. And especially since Rahn isn't actually a bad dude in any way, he's just a huge flirt with little desire for responsibility. He even said after the initial reaction, he wanted to give it a go with Leah & their baby but Leah had already run away so it was no longer an option. It feels almost like Chandran is the love interest for plot convenience. It might have been much better if they had become good trusted friends instead. Oh well. All the drama is going to start happening soon & then we will be done.

I think I figured out the problem. Chandran is completely removed from the plot until ⅔ through. He only just met Mally, Darien, & Zoe. Until then, he never interacted with any of the important characters. And his only relevance to the plot is his backstory so he can info dump about the Karkans bc apparently he is the ONLY one who knows anything about them. Which is total bs. There is no believable way that Darien has spies in literally every country except Karkans bc "he didn't think it important " the man who is acknowledged to want to know everything and somehow manages to do so. He 200% would have spies in Karkans, especially since they are neighbors and a potential threat. Makes no sense. So Chandran being the sole source of information is also unbelievable & also makes his role easily unnecessary. He could have told the info by letter & it would be the same since he is not involved at all in the plot & has no reason to be there. That's partly why the romance doesn't feel real like the other three couples. The others are all involved TOGETHER & working together to solve problems. Leah & Chandran are not working together & half the time Leah is convinced Chandran is going to kill her & her friends & family for no reason. Plus Leah is established as a spy but doesn't actually do anything to show for her experience. What she does is what anyone could do. So that is also disappointing.
