The musicians in Ch. 5 were particularly fine listens.
1. It'll take time to go through different Duke Ellington periods, but material I listened to piqued interests.
2. Billie Holiday's voice is SPECTACULAR and Strange Fruit ominous.
3. I enjoyed William Grant Still's first symphony start to end... and the ending of Symphony No. 2 was *grand*. You can hear other composers in his early works as he finds his voice.

"They were heavy on pianos, as well as on mandolins and banjos, because Europe felt the stringed instruments provided the steady, strumming accompaniment that made the music distinctive." See if recordings exist for these groups.

"In 1912, [James Reese] Europe conducted a 125-piece Clef Club Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall for the benefit of the Music School Settlement for Colored; he conducted a similar benefit concert, also at Carnegie Hall, for the settlement the following year." I don't know the timeline for when Black musicians began to play there, but given slow acceptance to Black music in some ways, I was surprised to see 1912.

The book doesn't go into great details - I'd imagine for a younger audience - but I was wanting to read this so I could get a simple list of names to investigate further. A book-given recommendation list for someone just starting out on some of these genres.
