Can't help but notice his takes on blacks & Native Americans which haven't aged well & would be incendiary in our time. Probably most shocking is his unilateral portrayal of Chinese immigration as a bad thing. He does incisively point out the hypocrisy of the Reconstruction republicans who wanted to enforce greater rights for southern black citizens than they were willing to grant in their own states in the north.

This book is forming the core of our study of early US history (grades 8 through 12) together. I was looking for a book that was neither a glittering patriotic work like Larry Schweikart's A Patriot's History nor a deconstructionist view like Howard Zinn's A People's History, something with more subdued metanarratives. This text was on the free shelf at Riverow Books. Perfect!
