Despite Nelson's efforts to establish unimpeachable authority on fairness and justice in these cases, it's difficult to see the Fish and Wildlife officer's work as anything but petty bureaucracy in some cases. The story of Ohio's largest poaching bust in history is a good example, where a meat processing business, Smokin B, was charged for processing 19 out of 44 provided deer, because those 19 were illegally killed.

Research for this book consisted of buying a thesaurus, flipping to the page that contained "dumb," and then choosing one term for each chapter.

"One of his cases involved everything from humour to unbelievable craziness." -- Nelson is no Shakespeare.

Nelson revels in describing the embarrassment "game wardens" cause when coercing confessions. In this one, a hunting show host "turned white" when told lying to an officer was a federal offense. His transgression? He thought he missed a shot on a deer, took another and had in fact shot two different deer. This was two years previous to the big sting operation, resulting in a $30k fine and 30 months of probation.

Hopefully the creepiness has peaked here, when an unimpeachably altruistic and virtuous wildlife officer requests to see pictures on a hunter's cell phone over the hunter's protests that they contained nude pictures of his girlfriend. Thank god he wasn't drinking bud light or they would've given him the chair.

The "Military Police--Reverse Bust" is probably the most interesting story in here, at least in terms of hypocrisy, though I'm only halfway done. Nelson calls the military police officer's behavior "shameful" and "cowardly" because he was hunting at night with spotlights from a vehicle, yet the wildlife officer was being pulled over for speeding through a military base?

In "The Bear Truth" an officer shoots a mother bear for attacking livestock and fails to collect all three of its nearby cubs. The remaining cub is found later and the officer transports it in a makeshift cage via station wagon to the forest. En route, the bear opens the cage and the officer decides to drive at unsafe speeds, then fistfight/shoot the bear with a handgun because it made him so mad. Very professional.

"...details that couldn't be matched by a description...trees with rotting carcasses of geese, ducks and swans strewn about...a freezer stuffed full of duck and goose breasts with no markings of who they belonged to....crazy things like this will and do happen."

"Orchid Smugglers" highlights the author's lack of persistence or awareness in explaining context. This chapter celebrates the actions of a fish and wildlife officer (most of us don't associate that authority with flowers) who spent 30 months bringing down an illegal orchid trade which brought in a total of $15,000 in fines. Were these the last orchids in existence? Were people killed in back-alley flower heists?

"Hunting for Dummies" #12 is baffling: a fox gets stuck in a soccer net at a preschool. The author asks if we can "imagine the puzzled parents when their preschoolers came home and told them about the fox in the soccer net?" Yes, that's very feasible. He goes on to say that it would have been "even better if there had been a grapevine nearby." This is apparently a reference to one of Aesop's fables. ???

"Surprise, Surprise!" is another one that fits the formula but makes you wonder what was so bad about what the hunters did, and why the author repeatedly refers to them as stupid.
