Why is it that we accept destroying an entire planet as a solution in space opera? Is it because it's less horrible than what is happening to the individual's planetside?

It's so dark I've really focused on other books this week.

Wow! I hadn't realized how very, very dark this trilogy was going to be when I started this first volume. It's disconcerting, to say the least.

I'm a little sidetracked right now. The "epic" nature of the book has forced Hamilton to introduce characters who seem tedious and uninteresting.

As I get further into it, this book is grittier than some of the more macabre elements of Gibson's cyberpunk. Indeed, the way Hamilton uses "bitek" (bio-tech) in this trilogy, I suspect it "could" be called cyberpunk with some reservation.

The plot is more epic than I usually like, but the universe and its inhabitants are brilliantly conceived.
