It's strange reading this after some decades. I liked the scene-setting, until the discovery of the manuscript, began to feel the 'unholy swine invasion' part absurd and overwrought, but have, but page 98, found myself gripped again by what is undoubtedly a very strange story, built on very odd conceptions.

We've got to the part where time speeds up -- vividly described, if just a little laboured. It seems a terrible shame that he died so young at Ypres. Curious, I've done some casual research. The internet tells me he wrote a poem called 'Amanda Panda'. Can this be true?

I actually didn't mind the swine invasion! In my review I likened it to "...some archaic, Victorian-era imagining of a lost level from DOOM"

Obviously, the book would not be the book it is without it, but I did, at moments, have a sensation akin to watching a decent actor playing valiantly with a bad script.
When you're finished re-reading Hodgson's original, I cannot recommend the late Avalon Brantley's sequel, 'The House of Silence', enough. She deftly weaves together threads from both 'The Night Land' and 'The House on the Borderland' to create a truly exquisite work of weird fiction.
Ah yes, I'm lucky enough to have a copy! I must take advantage of its presence.
You won't regret it. I really must re-read it one day soon, myself.
