Be honest, is this really any good?

That's a good question. I get tired of the bullshit.

Yeah, so far the story is atmospheric, compelling enough, even if it's hard to sympathize much with whalers, and the writing is quite beautiful. But there are, maybe typical of the period, gratuitously long digressions and so on.

We'll see how the second half goes. I can see why people think it's an exemplary piece of literature. But I can imagine also thinking that, like watching old tapes of Wayne Gretzky's Oilers, something can be great even if the overall talent pool has advanced beyond it.
