The Japanese had only been in complete control of Shanghai for less than two months, but already their Kempeitai detention centres were crammed with those considered a threat. Journalists, former policemen and the old taipans of pre-war Shanghai filled the cells. Among them were members of Britain's fledgling intelligence-gathering organization. Huddled together in stark terror they awaited the interrogators.

At 8.16am nuclear destruction flattened most of Hiroshima. Most Americans in the city, including two US Navy flyers, were vapourized. Evidence suggests some survived the blast only to be murdered. Two were probably dragged from their cells at Hiroshima Castle and clubbed to death by vengeful Kempeitai, while in the devastated city others were tied to lampposts and stoned to death by mobs of disbelieving civilians
