This is a really good book on zen. Here's how I know. If you asked me if this is a good book for beginners of zen study, I would answer, we are all beginners of zen study.

Gary Do we study zen or does zen study us?

Sandy Parsons You're veering more into Nietzsche territory...

"...If you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.”

Nathan Jerpe not to mention zen usually elicits a bemused chuckle, whereas nietzche (particularly that abyss quote) never ceases to disturb me

Gary Aw, Neetch (as I like to call him...mostly because I can never spell Nietzshch...his actual name) was just using antimetabole, which is one of my new favorite words. I use it every chance I get.*

* - This is the very first chance I've ever had to use the word.
