I have whiplash.
I went from reading ‘Grapes of Wrath’, Steinbeck’s soaring epic of a Depression-era family on the move, to ‘Slaughterhouse Five’. Nothing could’ve prepared me for the cerebral shock of Vonnegut’s fast-paced, sardonic, dark wit. There’s nothing funny about ‘Grapes of Wrath’. There’s also nothing funny about war, but Vonnegut dares me not to laugh.
