Just wanted to add, Saroyan is difficult to quote in a few lines. Because there is so much context in each line. He's like Saramago that way - you need to read a whole paragraph or page to see the irony and humor.

I'm jumping around, reading shorter pieces first. Most is fiction, but there are essays and letters in here. "The World's Champion Elevator Operator" is deservedly famous. "Finlandia" is beautiful. "A Cold Day" has good advice for short story writers. "The Parsley Garden" is great, "The Hummingbird That Lived Through the Winter" is a sweet vignette. Good: Fable IX, Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze.
