Coverage of Chinese history from 1900-1960 is very cursory and rather oversimplified, but still better than most.
This is an acceptable flaw, as the book isn't specifically about that time period, but the one immediately after.

Walder, Dikötter, & Ji Xianlin would all disagree. With all the infighting, destruction, and ideological rigidity, any semblance of "democracy" is doubtful
