Home, home on the square. Now I’m going nowhere. Except to my grave. They weren’t bothering to hide their identities, which meant they knew I wouldn’t be around to identify them. Coney would get his wish—shooting me in self-defense while I was resisting arrest. The police as the bad guys has certainly taken the upper hand in this episode. Different approach from the past part of the series.

Her heavy frown shifted from Julia to me. “You’re reminding me what a major pain you usually are, Warshawski. It’s always push, push, push. As soon as we do you favor one, you need favor two.” VI sure has a mixed reputation!

We witness the scene of what seems to be major police malfeasance in dealing with our heroine. This seems like a new twist in a new era regarding relations with the police. Overt overreaction and brutality did not come to mind in previous books immediately.

The events in this series are not always extremely complicated. Coincidence of individuals and events are not uncommon. It all just goes to show that Chicago is really just a small town. Ha ha.

I stopped reading this series sometime ago, and I thought it was completed, but I see now that it has continued on in my absence. This is the current “last” book. It occurs during the era of Covid.
