I'm so silly for reading reviews of this that spoiled it. Anyway, I disagree with reviews complaining that Wang Qiyao is unrealistic and unrelatable. She's a pretty woman who knows she's pretty, in a city that, no matter how many changes of ideology it pretends to undergo, feeds off the prettiness of women. That's sufficient to explain almost all aspects of her character, as the author continually emphasises.
