I've heard this is a problem with a lot of her stuff. It puts me off reading her tbh.

It puts me off reading her tbh."It's nothing I haven't seen in 20th century fiction, but it's relentless in this one, since the Europeans want to enjoy Egypt without the Egyptians (called "flies" by one character and affirmed by the narrative). Wish they'd provide context for readers, the way they do with old Tom and Jerry cartoons.
Yeah, a good critical introduction perhaps! Although that sounds bad enough that maybe we should just leave it in the past where it belongs.
