I like it when there are fewer gaps in a spotlight between protagonists; when we can observe them in the same scenes. I am enjoying this point at which Margaret Laurence's character snippets have met and instead of being separate stories, are twining together in any size of involvement. It appears that Johnnie will become less of a creep and we might eventually dredge up sympathy with him.

I knew this book was specifically about a pivotal climate of politics. The most hands-on and enjoyable way to convey it to someone as far removed as most of us, in distance as well as time, is to let us follow one character or two. I like three of the chief players and hope things go well for them. Margaret had the rare front seat of a Canadian couple living there just before Ghana drastically changed.

This has veered political and to family dysfunction and discord, not very palatable. But Margaret's words continue to grace even the least pleasant meanings. You sense you are in professional hands and that her ultimate message, through two couples of different cultures, is going to be worthwhile and important. In my experience her words, one-of-a-kind tableaux, and riveting personages stay with you.

I only peeked at the first page. In a wink, Margaret Laurence enthalled me and I wanted to know what the next and the next paragraphs said. Therefore I drudged it higher up on my list and shall read it!
