An excellent history of Stephens and Catherwood's discoveries of ancient Mayan cities that influenced the archaeological research of the 19th and 20th centuries. We learn that Catherwood's illustrations--created under very difficult circumstances--are the clearest depictions of the details of their discoveries, which have been eroded over the years since.
