Julio The Fox Gerhard: i love BLADE RUNNER 2049, but, face it, it's just the Messiah story with/for machines.

Igor Something similar to 'the hero with a thousand faces'

The interesting about the 1982 movie is that it was an analogue world, without internet or mobile phones. Villeneuve wanted to work out logically how such a technologically regressed world would have advanced, hence why 2049 is such a curious blend of hi-tech and really old-fashioned stuff.

Ridley Scott himself has said it is an Apartheid allegory, with the replicants a subservient under-class exploited by the ruling elite.

Julio The Fox Dear Gerhard: Yes, I have read both Ridley Scott and fan notes on how BLADE RUNNER can be interpreted as an allegory of race relations, with the replicants substituting for American racial and ethnic minorities. I wish 2049 had led us down the path of "Gosling is the Chosen One", which is hinted at but then abandoned.

That is interesting. It is a character arc / trope that Villeneuve would go on to explore in Dune. (I really hope he gets to make a trilogy and caps it off with Dune Messiah).

Julio The Fox Quite true, Gerhard. In DUNE the frehmen are the workers driven underground while the aristocrats and the emperor grow rich, and brainier if not wiser, off the spice.
