Not too much has actually happened, but something keeps me coming back. I don't think Sanderson hit the "growth spurt" for his prose JUST yet, because average scenes, actions scenes, dialogue, etc. and the transitions between feel a little same-y and slightly clunky. Thus, I'm guessing what keeps me coming back is his excellent worldbuilding, not to mention his improving character work compared to earlier books.

Interesting observations. I started to read this book and got to page 160 and gave up. Mainly for the reasons you’ve said. Keep me updated on how it goes (without revealing plot).
