I'm sure my life will be a lot more peaceful when I accept that my TBR list will never be empty and trying to achieve this is a fool's game.

Daniel I don't consider actual books I've purchased to be books I will for sure read, much less my so called TBR, it's more a pool of potential reads and place to list things I'd like to remember exist just in case.

Books lying around and sitting on my kindle are one thing, but my TBR is like a to-do list, I'll only put a book on it if I really, really want to read it. But it stresses me out because the rate I add books and the rate I read books are not commensurate.

Daniel Sounds almost like the reverse of how I use it. If I really, really want to read something I usually just buy it (or put it in the price tracker if I'm hoping/expecting for a price drop by the time I'm ready for it). Unfortunately it's all too common for me to go from reading this is the most important thing in the world to meh, whatever in the amount of time it takes the book to arrive or for me to finish whatever I was reading before.

I definitely don't add everything to the "to-read" list and I do split my goodreads TBR into multiple lists though so it's not so embarassing, and I was not pleased when the main one passed 500. I don't want to look like one of those people who add every single book they see and have "to-read" lists in the 10,000s. Very low curiosity type of stuff just tends to get a sample downloaded to kindle to be stumbled across at random at some point, or just purged when too many of them build up.
