He flashed one of his dimples as his mouth formed a mocking smirk.
Evangeline hadn’t missed this at all. “You’re asking the wrong girl, Jacks. Unlike HER, I know you’re not a god.”
“Yet you’re the one who prayed at my church.”

“Just bringing the stones together is potentially cataclysmic… I do love my brother, but saving his life isn’t worth this risk. If you have a heart, let him shoot it with an arrow. Turn yourselves into another tragic Northern ballad and keep the rest of us safe from the power locked inside the Valory.”

“It didn’t do anything to me,” chimed Jacks.
“Only because the luck stone makes people reckless, and you’re always reckless,” Chaos replied.
Jacks shrugged. “What’s the point of being an immortal if you live like a human?”
“But I thought you could die?” Evangeline asked.
“Why? Planning on murdering me?” Jacks’s eyes glittered.

“No one knows how the story ends, so anything could have happened.”
“But it didn’t,” Jacks snapped back. “Ballads never end happily, everyone knows that. No one has to actually read the whole story to know the Archer has blood on his hands. Open the arch, Evangeline, or die just like the Fox.”

Jacks’s chest was heaving, his clothes were soaked, his hair was a mess across his face—yet in that moment, Evangeline knew he would carry her through more than just freezing waters. He would pull her through fire if he had to, haul her from the clutches of war, from falling cities and breaking worlds.
