Chapter 50 of Gormenghast is the reason we read fantasy.

I just finished the first novel in this trilogy and am dumbfounded by the staggering brilliance of the language, the characters, the sense of place, the subtlety folded into the grandeur. Folks have said this is up there with LOTR, but it is in a class all it’s own. Fucking shit this is amazing.
