Now, let’s talk about how it’s often easier for writers to play it safe with their main characters. Will is playing out to be the perfect fantasy hero archetype so far. I’m not even sure why, but my gut feeling? Pacat’s a risk-taker. So I have this expectation of him becoming more than “the beautiful one who saves the day” and I better not be disappointed. Not with “Dark rise” in the title, Ms. Pacat.

More than that, the character of Violet is what’s impressing me the most. The need for her character rather than Violet herself, though she’s definitely growing on me bit by bit. Classic opposite sides trope but very well done so far. Kinda hoping we don’t get any chapter from Tom’s POV, at least not in this first book.

My interest somehow just spiked through the roof with the last couple of chapters, despite the slow start. I’m usually averse to alternating POVs, yet it’s turning out to be a clever tool in building up tension here. Pacat’s such an impressive writer.
