“By accepting responsibility for objects, no matter what state we receive them in, we are agreeing to protect and preserve them and, in most cases, to make them available to those for whom the objects have significance and interest. In a sense we are making an implicit promise or contract with the objects, as we take on an ethical, and in many instances, fiduciary, responsibility for the collections in our care.”
