Having watched the excellent tv series 'Gentleman Jack' I'm now turning to Anne Lister's diaries to check to what extent the tv drama is faithful to the facts. I was very interested to read that Anne Lister and Mariana Lawton had not only planned a future together but that Mariana's husband had discovered one of their letters, which made him 'extremely jealous and suspicious'.

From p.39: An interesting aspect of A’s self-presentation was her secretive attitude towards discussing or writing about her clothes. She obviously felt reticent about her dress and appearance and was constantly the subject of criticism from her friends for her shabby and unfashionable wardrobe. She always used her cryptic code when referring to her clothes eventually deciding to wear only black.

It is also interesting that following the discovery of the letter, Anne started writing to Mariana in code so that Charles, Mariana's husband, would be unable to read another letter even if he found one. 'Anne also used this code in her journal to pour out her feelings in privavcy'. So it appears that the origins of the code in the diaries lies in Anne's and Mariana's wish to correspond without fear of being discovered.
