Dr. Spencer Black went from a well-known and respected doctor to someone perceived as a madman. From reading the parts where Dr. Black had written letters to friends, family, or former colleagues, you can see him down-spiral in his written letters. He had begun experimenting on small animals or dogs, and in his last letter, it is assumed he even experimented on his wife Elisabeth.

i was re-reading parts of the beginning, and I re-evaluated the change in Dr. Black and the way I viewed him then vs. where i am now. I thought of him as more philosophical and curious in a way than i was. I could relate in a way. All of that was thrown out the window once I had read he experimented on animals and his wife, though. At that point and time, he really had become insane.

I've really enjoyed this book so far; reading about his life and his aspirations makes me think of my own as I share a similar fascination as Dr. Spencer Black. He had spent time working and studying human deformities and managed to associate the deformities with fictional creatures. The anatomical sketches are beautifully macabre and bring a new sense of curiosity and wonder to me.
