Reading this a page or two at a time to practice French, and I can’t tell if either 1) the curtain is being peel back at just how horrendously approximate French–English translations are, and how formal and devoid of casual phraseology the French language is, OR, 2) this is just a very bad translation of the original Ishiguro story.
