When, on the other hand, the revelation of God is seen as delineating the path that leads back to God, and when fidelity to that revelation is motivated by fidelity to the Absolute, then the translation of the universal, ontological principle of submission to God into the specific, religious act of submission to His revelation will be untainted by any religious 'idolatry'.

It is not only the different sciences but also the different virtues that can become veils over the Real; even the supreme virtue of ikhlas, sincerity, purity of devotion, can be a veil insofar as the individual appropriates it to himself rather than attributing its presence in the soul to the grace of God, the Object of devotion.
