actually it wasn't billed as a contest but a talent show, which carried the positive american message that every child was a bright little star who could shine in his or her own galaxy. but I had not been raised in the ideology of american constellations. each star would be shinier or duller than the others. only one kid could be the very best and one would be the very worst.
