There's a lot I could say about this story. At times the character work is brilliant, and other times it feels wildly unbelievable. There seems to be some things that were missed in editing (references to Rome in a fantasy world?), but it's also very readable with a compelling premise. So I'm largely undecided on it yet.

I finished this some time ago but my memory of it has already faded enough that I don't feel comfortable writing a review for it. It had some high moments, but also a lot of contrivances and repetition. I won't personally be continuing the series but it wasn't terrible for those interested.
