“If we seek to understand the surface features of our culture while paying no attention to the deep assumptions, convictions, concepts, and stories out of which they arise, we will only achieve a disjointed and ultimately superficial grasp of our times, and will have little hope of influencing the culture. Such a proof-texting approach to cultural engagement can never adequately understand the ideas and values of our culture any more than a proof-texting approach to the Bible can yield a deep understanding of God’s word.”
