Finished book one. Murakami is not a great stylist. The prose is pretty regular, but it's a compelling story. Almost a beach read.
The level of fantasy extends to the characters of the women, as in many men's books, who are extremely sexually available with few emotional needs. Aomame is mysterious enough that it works so far, though.
