Hobbies can be an act of nurturing self-love.
Yet if the progress in life is projected on the activity of a hobby, which is never stretched upon the already known, this hobby may have become a substitute for self-development.
It may seem and shortly feel like growth, but the hobby itself is an end of such, rather than the beginning

„When we extend ourselves (..) we do so in opposition to the inertia of laziness or the resistance of fear. [M]oving out against this inertia we call work. Moving out in the face of fear we call courage. Love, then, is a form of work or a form of courage [..] directed toward the nurture of our own or another's spiritual growth.
[…] If an act is not one of work or courage, then it is not an act of love.“

Love is a self-enlargening process, in which the ego boundaries have to be stretched whilst accumulating more information and experience with the external subject of desire

Depression seen as a currently happening growth process. The sensation is experienced, when behaviour patterns no longer serve the self, although they might have been stabilizing and helpful in the past. Whilst the unconscious already knows sth has to be LOT GO OF, the conscious mind still clings onto the seemingly lifeline.

“Patients desire relief from the symptoms of their depression so things can be as they used to be. They don’t know that things can no longer be the way they used to be'. But the unconscious knows. It is ‘cuz the unconscious in its wisdom knows that the way things used to be' is no longer tenable (..) that the process of growing & giving up is begun on an unconscious level - depression is experienced.” [72]

Dedication to truth
Lying is a symptom of circumventing suffering, due to which it’s productive to illness. Any intentional act of dishonesty is a source of burden (lying initiates more lies to cover up). However in spec situations the expression of feels/knowledge has to be suppressed (p.65) as an act of wise calculation.
Dedication to truth requires courage - with the avail of living secure, open and free.

“It is in this whole process of meeting and solving problems that life has its meaning.”
“(…) we must always hold truth, as best we can determine it, to be more important, more vital to our self-interest, than our comfort.”
“Of all those who come to a (..) psychotherapist very few are initially looking on a conscious level for challenge or an education in discipline. Most are simply seeking 'relief.”

The avoidance of pain is one of the fundamental roots of mental illness, hence any chronic illness seems to be a substitute for legitimate suffering. It is therefore necessary to experience the pain constructively. This may be done through the tools of discipline (delay of gratification, balancing, dedication to truth, acceptance of responsibility), acted out with love.
