Hirondelle (not getting notifications) LOL. Report back, so your sacrifice will not be for nothing...

(I read two chapters, noped, but it made me want to reread anne mccaffrey, which I skimmed for a bit...)

jrendocrine at least reading is good yes, very reminiscent of Dragons of Pern, especially the dragon sex driving the human links mad with desire. The Pern books were probably badly written... (too!).. but I was a lot younger then and it was about the only fantasy with dragons going. Dragons are good. Naomi Novik did a fine job in her first several of the Temeraire series.

4th Wing is pure young adult. The holding off on hot sex is only one of the well worn tropes. The distant mother. The strong hiding in the frail (seeming) body. etc etc

That being said, the glee my daughter has discussing all the "points", (texting) even when I am complaining, is pretty joyful.

Hirondelle (not getting notifications) Books which create fan feelings, the joy of it is so much much fun! And if you read this you can talk to her about it, and theories and such! I saw news, the print run of the hardcover for the second volume of this, out soon, is 1.5 MILLION copies. 1.5 MILLION copies, in the USA alone. That is amazing.

Fan feelings were not invoked in me by this, but my partial reread of the first Pern book was better than I expected (and rereading Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea was unexpectedly problematic), maybe the thing was expectations. The writing was nothing to brag about, not timeless, but Lessa was a lot more interesting, manipulative but full of agency than I remembered. No insta-lust, they consider themselves politically first and foremost. It was interesting. If I ever finish that reread I will post about, but rereading it, but Lessa has just so much agency...

yes to all.
A note about LeGuin - when young I never read anything other than the YA Earthsea books. Her philosophical works - Dispossessed Left Hand of Darkness - are 100% adult, complex, difficult and worthy in so many ways. She was ahead of her time.

Hirondelle (not getting notifications) I still have not reread LeGuin's adult books, I want to d some more Earthsea books, maybe later... I am almost afraid actually.

ha ha! it is kind of a mother daughter bonding moment. Never know what you might learn! Though I must say, since my own got me to read this, she is now pushing the Maas books which she says are "much better written"... give a mouse a cookie....

Oh no!

Hirondelle (not getting notifications) jrendocrine, the Maas books are much better written compared to this. Or the one I read was compared to the chapters of this I have read! It was on my mind while reading this, that Maas was competent at writing

But it was too long (which is something which is making me so impatient) for the story it was, and leak about plots and turns of previous books are just not appealing too much, but the writing really was lots better. I have tried a bunch of other writers, samples usually but Maas I managed to finish one long book...

You do deserve a long break before even attempting Maas though....

Have you two read Laini Taylor? Or Megan Whalen Turner?

I read Megan Whalen Turner, all she wrote actually, I am a big fan. It is a really different style, and skill level and different kind of story than Maas. Jrendocrine, I think you might like her! It is the kind of story Dunnett readers will find rewarding, except a bit more YA (though IMO only the first book is really YA). And so much room for analysis and fan theories and all. Limited PoVs into what clever clever people are doing politically wise...

Michelle, I read part of a book by Laini Taylor, can't judge all of it, but the writing was just skipping me, I was not connecting to characters nor getting into the prose or caring about plot, so I never finished that book (I did finish one Maas novel, much longer..). It was Laini Taylor's first novel (edit, no, it was not sorry, it was Daughter of Smoke and Bone though, she might have improved (for my taste) since then though...

You had me at Dunnett (I am so shallow) !! - I will see if we can have a mother daughter read (believe it or not, I did get her to read ALL of Niccolo a long time ago, and she loved it - I think?) Would you mind telling me where to start?

I have read Megan Whalen Turner's Queen's Thief series at least four times. Every now and again I get in the mood for it!

Hirondelle (not getting notifications) You have the start with The Thief and do not even read the blurbs for the next books for optimal experience! (I started reading it when book 2 was just out, how I squealed at some titles!).

The Thief is different in tone, it is more, explicitly YA than the rest, and it is on its way a standalone. The next books, and they are all different, no cliffhangers, but different PoVs give more perspective on what happens next, the politics (and divine motivations) of that land and those characters. It is one of my fandoms, the things I am a fangirl about. I think it might be great also to read with a friend (daughters included!) because MWT can be cryptic, leave feelings and plot points to be interpreted by the reader, and so on.

If you do read it, post about it, I will be stalking you (it is fun to watch people read for the first time things one can't read fresh again!)

uh oh, dont hate me, i have read it and now remember looking at my review, which was, yeah this is YA. do i dare go to #2?

Hirondelle (not getting notifications) LOL, go to 2, it is really different in tone, and you do not need to remember much of the details just (view spoiler)
