It's partly the personal circumstances that intervened in my reading of Mann's Magic Mountain, but also my response to his sophisticated but hollow & diseased/dis-eased characters, but Lord of the Rings is the absolute antidote to this. To quote Mr Tolkien it's like following his instruction: "Breathe the free air." My that air - it tastes good!

After a week of madcap working style, what a delight to lie back in a nice, hot bath & soak in this delightful read at the same time. In all the times I've read it, I still enjoy most the lyrical passages that lead the Hobbits to Bree.
