Truly shocked at the number of people in positions of power who are utterly convinced they know how the future will play out in respect to geopolitics and war (e.g. the war to end all wars, arms races, etc.).

Possibly my favorite minor passage is that one paragraph where this random acquaintance tries to take down Oppie by claiming he was closeted and slept with a male Caltech student.

"Look, what if the Nazis get it first?" This book is SO GOOD at dropping you directly into the 1930s/1940s mindset, especially vis a vis the US Communist Party and Soviet relations.

It’s never not surprising to learn that an important historical figure actually grew up pretty wealthy. (That said, bullying and antisemitism = very bad.) And for such a weird introverted guy, Oppie seemed to amass a big following pretty young. I guess he just had that glow.

PS: the story of how he got the Opje/Oppie nickname is adorable.
