I’m infuriated with the Very Special Girl narrative. The adults are treating refusing to speak like it’s admirable and not disruptive to any group activity. There is a difference between protest and making life harder on the people near you for attention.

My raised by white parents in the late 20th century side is furious that one parent is made the kid won’t speak or eat at dinner and the other parent sneaks her a cookie.
