First essay (Bartleby: Art and Social Commitment) I read but it did not register well with me because it's a very close reading of a short story (Bartleby the Scrivener by Melville) that I haven't read. If I read the story I'll definitely go back and re-read this. Essay #2 is "An Invective Against Mere Fiction" and it's quite fabulous. I highlighted ridiculous amounts. Funny, and you get a sense for Gardner's rigor.
