First book by Daniel Kraus I've read. I relish the conversational tone, the phrasing, short and pointed, full of pluck and attitude that conveys the personalities of father and son.
Lean, clean, direct, matter of fact writing interspersed with muscular, choppy sentences and turns of phrase. Feels utterly natural without a hint of being forged, beaten and hammered, refined into seemingly effortless prose.

Brilliant storytelling balancing the main character's interior life, reckoning with the twisting weathervane relationship of local legend who is his dead father, and unimaginable circumstances. A richly rewarding fight for survival tale.
