In a letter to Albert Einstein in 1932, published as “Why War?’, Freud wryly notes that the ‘popularity’ of his theory of the death drive ‘is by no means equal to its importance’. He knows he is on to a winner. How could the notion of the death drive be ‘popular’? A similar point might be made in relation to the ‘place’ and ‘significance’ of the death drive in the context of literary criticism.

3 hournwalks.do wonders when listening to books. Plus, the last third of this book is a hefty helping of stream of consciousness prose. Whew!
