Unexpected: Saussure himself 1) creates semiotics, and 2) extends its scope to include what Claude Lévi-Strauss would later do. My (erroneous) understanding had been that structuralism had come to C. L.-S. obliquely, from Saussure through Roman Jakobson. I didn't know Saussure had laid the path out so clearly.
