Sedaris gained a voice after writing these shorts. Don't know when. "Barrel Fever" is such a marked stepping stone that one wonders: did DS have a coach? I know he lost a sibling. Is this when it happened, between "Barrel Fever" and his subsequent work, when he came into his own? "Barrel Fever" is s good read, a page-turner, even, particularly with stylized works like "My Manuscript."
