“Like a knife through warm butter.” I am kind of reading (listening) for malapropisms and odd vocabulary choices at this point.

Recent memorable word usages include “monumentous occasion” (momentous?) and something about where they were going to “intern” a body (inter). At this point this book is pretty non-demanding so I guess I’ll push through. She does a great sarcastic and brooding magician prince, though, I’ll give her that.

I’m out, at least for now. Maybe I’ll finish by reading it. Still nothing has happened and there is zero conflict. Briony has a goal but all she’s been doing is wandering around Asperfell meeting people and being unable to hold her tongue, again. This book makes no sense. How Asperfell’s society works makes no sense either.

“Evidently he’d gathered enough of his strength [from magically mending a wall]to scowl at me, for he did, voraciously.” There is no flirting here (yet). The author meant ferociously. Who edited this? I hope the narrator just mis-spoke but I don’t think so.

Almost to Auckland. I think the author thinks that parchment is paper- the (fragile?) books are on parchment and Briony is given parchment to take notes on. Apparently the two prison cows are magically cloned but this would not yield much parchment.

“Dishes teeming with butter.” ??

At least stuff is maybe starting to happen?

20% in and maybe something is about to actually happen? If this man hadn’t been having a loud conversation this entire bus ride I would have already given up on this.

“A wedding ring firmly ensconced on her finger…” and still no forward plot action from the narrator though we did fast-forward 10 years. More court second-hand news about the suppression of magic in the kingdom.

Two hours or 14% of this book is childhood prologue. Non-optimal pacing.

“Redolent with the family crest,” “Piercing screams of pain rendering the air.” Either the narrator is mis-speaking or this book needed a copy edit.
