I remember in the Depression run up to World War II are in alarming number of young men were so malnourished as to be unfit for service. Ironically, the prosperity during and shortly after the war didn't help the physical aspect of military readiness. Watts says in 1949 40% were disqualified from military service because of too much of the good life.
