As hyped up as this book was, it was really difficult to get into for me. The story takes place in the early 1950's-1970 in North Carolina so there were definitely some difficult to read passages depicting the prejudices of the South.

It does pick up and ends up ending on a much higher note. I've heard the movie is good; kinda wish I'd just watched it instead
