The narrative has done a fine job of expanding the larger scope and scale of the conflict in space and on the ground. It has also put necessary focus on characters other than Master Chief, adding much depth and detail to their decision making/candor.
There is also a clear contrast of Chief as a young Spartan vs that of a middle aged spartan.

Characters are described well and engaging, yet slightly dry.
The strongest piece of the narrative is in its action sequences, making it very easy to visualize.
One major flaw thus far: This is an origin story. The book skips the most interesting segment of Spartan training. Augmentation.
