Totally non-book related, but I'm appliance shopping, and I love the look of the GE Slate appliances. Unfortunately, no dual fuel range available. Debating how bad a gas oven really is vs electric. Any thoughts?

Jilrene I'm all about electric, but I have friends who would never trust electric. My biggest complaint about gas is the smell. However, I've been told it's all in my imagination. ;-) Sorry, that probably isn't much help.

I think some of the older gas ovens smelled. We had a gas oven for about 6 months a few years ago, and I remember it didn't bake as well as the electric ovens we've had. I love gas stove tops, though, so the dual fuel range was perfect for us in our last house. Now I'm debating which is more important, the gas top or electric oven. (or do I just go to the stainless steel appliances so I get the dual fuel)

I hate all these choices.

Vanessa North I've had a gas oven for years and I love it.

No concerns about baking evenly or roasting well? Also, do you adjust the temp down when following directions?

Sara I prefer a electric oven and a gas stove top but we have had gas for both the last 10 years and I've never had a problem. I do keep a thermometer in the oven to make sure it keeps the right temp. I don't trust all the technology these days digitally telling me how hot the oven is which 9/10 is wrong. o.O

I only adjust it down if I'm using the convection settings. Otherwise I follow the recipes as written. I've never had trouble with things not baking or roasting evenly. :)

Sunny Awesome! Thank you, Vanessa and Sara, your comments are making the decision much easier :)

Emma Sea i am scared of gas :( it's a disaster preparedness thing

Elizabetta I'm with Sara -- I'd suggest dual fuel if you can. I love the gas cooker with electric oven combo. It's so much easier to control the heat with gas. And the electric oven has worked fine so far... I don't miss that gas smell you can get when heating up a gas oven.

Gas makes me nervous, too, but no more so than the prpane grill. I'm just more cautious around them.

If I wasn't so drawn to the slate finish, I'd definitely get the dual range.

Sheri I absolutely love my gas and it's all I'll ever own. I have no problem with odor (unless for some reason you turn the burner on and don't turn it all the way over to ignite first...then the gas that is released that doesn't burn has an odor. it's a safety precaution) and it cooks even for me. I never have to adjust temps while baking.
BUT....I think it's all what you are use to. We are big breakfast people and I make the best eggs...at home. Whenever I'm at my in-laws and have to use their electric stove, my eggs turn out like shit!
I grew up cooking with gas, sooo....I think it's preference.
Best of luck shopping!

The slate is so pretty...

Vivian Electric ovens are drier, better for baking.

I've always had gas ovens. There is an emergency shut off valve, so no issue there. I don't have a smell while using it.

Perfect kitchen would be electric oven gas range. I just redid mine, but I passed on the electric oven because it would have been $3000 extra dollars to add a new circuit to my board.

Thank you, Sheri! I'm pretty sure we are going with gas, so it's great to hear positive feedback :)

We'll be wired and connected for both...it's the slate that is keeping me from the dual fuel. Seems kind of silly, but I really like the look.

MostlyDelores I grew up with electric, that's what I'm used to, and I always find that gas has a smell when I'm at someone's house who has it. I wouldn't get gas.

I would be very interested in an induction cook top though, or split induction and electric.

I'm intrigued by the induction, too.
